The continuous spread of cities and urban lifestyles, along with the increasing distance from natural environments, creates environmental challenges, new urbanisation trends, and opportunities. For the sake of our future, we must wisely seek out settlement forms that can effectively help us live together and create “shared habitats.” The available land determines the physical boundaries of urban development. At the same time, the success of conscious settlement formation depends largely on cooperation skills, governance, and the adequacy of planning mechanisms and processes. Our settlements and spatial systems must be able to respond to the dynamics of environmental and social change. These present new challenges and tasks from time to time, requiring continuous development and renewal in the field. The contribution of scientific research is essential for this. This volume presents a selection of research results from young scholars in the field of urban planning. The volume is a follow-up to the 1st Hungarian Doctoral Student Conference on Urban Studies and Planning, held on February 6, 2025, from which 20 research papers were selected for further elaboration in this volume. The conference, and thus this volume, was organised through the cooperation of leading Hungarian organisations in the field of urban planning: the Hungarian Society for Urban and Spatial Planning, the ELTE University Centre for Geography, the Corvinus University of Budapest – Department of Geography and Planning, and the Technical University of Budapest, Department of Urban Planning and Design. The 21 studies presented in this book introduce the broader audience to the interesting findings of the latest generation of researchers on urban green spaces, sustainability, and the challenges of urban planning processes.

Az angol nyelvű kötet a városok és a városi életforma terjedéséből fakadó környezeti és társadalmi kihívásokra reflektál, különös figyelmet fordítva a fenntartható településfejlődés és a tudatos várostervezés kérdéseire. A tanulmányok rámutatnak arra, hogy a természeti környezettől való eltávolodás új urbanizációs trendeket és alkalmazkodási kényszereket hoz létre, amelyekre a településeknek és térbeli rendszereknek rugalmas válaszokat kell adniuk. A kötet hangsúlyozza az együttműködés, az irányítás és a megfelelő tervezési mechanizmusok szerepét a sikeres városfejlesztésben. A kiadvány a 2025. február 6-án megrendezett 1. Magyar Doktorandusz Konferencia a Várostudomány és Tervezés Témakörében című eseményhez kapcsolódik, és fiatal kutatók munkáiból közöl válogatást. A kötet 21 tanulmánya a városi zöldfelületek, a fenntarthatóság és a várostervezési folyamatok aktuális kérdéseit mutatja be szélesebb közönség számára.
